What to Know About Cataracts

Do you know the feeling you have when the windows fog up due to moisture? This feeling might happen to you regularly if you have contacts, even when the windows aren't fogging up. This issue can cause your vision to look as if you're looking through the fog. Fortunately, at Graham Eye Associates, we offer cataract screenings and comprehensive eye care for our patients.

About Cataracts

Cataracts present when your internal focusing lenses develop a cloud or haze on its surfaces. This portion of your eye is usually clear. However, when you develop cataracts, you slowly develop clouding in your vision. The cataract usually starts small and gradually increases in size. Therefore, it's not always easy to tell if you have this condition without a thorough eye exam.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of cataracts include seeing halos around lights and noticing that everything looks dim, blurry, or cloudy. Some people notice that their color vision begins to fade, and colors don't look as vibrant as they once did. You may notice that your glasses or contacts prescription will also change frequently.

Getting an Eye Exam

The only way to diagnose cataracts accurately is through a comprehensive eye exam. During this eye exam, you will have to undergo a vision assessment as well as an evaluation of your overall eye health. Dr. Graham will evaluate the structures of your eyes using specialized magnifying and imaging devices. The examination will provide a more comprehensive overview of your visual system and the cataracts' impact on your visual function.

Treating Cataracts

After your eye exam, Dr. Graham will recommend treatment approaches aimed at improving your visual function. Treatment approaches include observation, altering your glasses or contact lens prescriptions, as well as surgical extraction of the cataracts. Treatment approaches for patients are individualized and are determined by visual function loss and adverse changes to quality of life.
