Dry Eye FAQs

Do you have the feeling of something is in your eyes, or are your eyes constantly red or itchy? If so, you probably suffer from a common condition known as dry eye. This syndrome affects about 4.88 million Americans, and it is the result of inadequate tears. Our experienced ophthalmologists, At Graham Eye Associates, we provide residents of The Woodlands, Spring, and Magnolia, TX, with dry eye treatment. Following are the answers to several questions our eye doctor frequently receives regarding dry eye.

Who Is at Risk for Dry Eye?

Numerous factors can put you at risk for dry eye syndrome. As you get older, your eyes produce fewer tears, which can trigger this syndrome. Dry eye is a side effect of certain medications, including decongestants, antihistamines, acne, and birth control. Specific medical conditions can also bring about dry eyes, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vitamin A deficiency, scleroderma, and Sjogren's syndrome. Most people will experience this condition after having laser eye surgery, but it is only temporary.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

The symptoms of dry eye can be uncomfortable and may include the following:

  • Feeling like you have something in your eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Stinging and burning sensation in the eyes
  • Eye redness
  • Watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Trouble driving at night
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue

How Is Dry Eye Diagnosed?

Our optometrist can tell you if you have dry eyes with an eye exam. If you report suffering from dry eye symptoms, we can perform a Schirmer’s test. During this test, we will place a blotting strip under your lower lid for five minutes. After that time, we will measure the number of tears that were soaked up by the strip.

What Are the Treatment Options for Dry Eye?

In mild cases, our eye surgeons will prescribe artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated. If that doesn’t work for you, we may block your tear ducts and insert punctual plugs so that your tears can last longer before drying up. If the plugs are effective, your eye doctor may suggest a permanent method of closing the tear ducts.
