Symptoms of Dry Eye

When you have dry eye, you can get a number of different symptoms. The eyes simply feeling dry and irritated is a major symptom. The eyes may also burn or itch, or they may sting. You may have watery eyes as the body overcompensates for the dryness. It's common to have long strings of mucus on your eyes or in your eyelashes. You may also have eyes that are red or feel like there is something lodged in them. You may also have blurry vision. Dry eye can make the eyes feel tired, and you may get headaches from the eye strain.

Causes of Dry Eye

There are many causes of this condition, and you may have multiple causes. There are many medications that may cause this condition. If you have been through a major hormonal shift, such as menopause or pregnancy, this can cause dry eye. It can also be caused by being in front of a computer for long hours. When you spend time in front of a screen, you don't blink as often, and this cause the tear film on your eyes to evaporate too fast. This can also happen if you are outside in the wind a lot without sunglasses. A room with a lot of air conditioning can cause it as well as fans. If you run or bike, this can also cause your tear film to dry out from the wind. Our family eye care practitioner can tell you whether you have dry eye during your eye check up and let you know whether you have this condition.
